Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Last year ended on a sweet note with holidays for some families and the children who stayed with us were learning about how Christmas is observed around the world, as well as enjoyed a day of fun with the Water Slide. We’ve said good-bye to some of our graduates and families who are moving onto new chapters of their lives. This is what the 4 Classes were up to in December, I hope you enjoy the read.
Monet and Michelangelo Class: We had a rough start to December due to a virus that circulated through the centre, so we decided to focus on personal hygiene that week. During circle time we spoke to the children about how to wash their hands and when. We also explained other ways to ensure that bacteria does not spread; these included not sharing food and drinks, blowing noses and covering their mouths when they cough and sneeze. This topic worked extremely well, as we were able implement it in all areas, including Montessori time and the art activities. The second week we saw one of our most anticipated events, the water slide. During the week we learnt about water safety and through group conversations and watching our Kids alive videos, the students gained a better understanding on how they can stay safe around water this summer. We discussed some of the key points of safety; swim between the yellow and red flags, always wear sunscreen, always have an adult with you – no swimming alone. On the Tuesday we had our water slide. From the moment the children arrived it was non-stop talk about the water slide and the excitement of getting to wear their togs. They enjoyed themselves, going up and down the slide and splashing in the wading pool below. We also had the sprinklers going, so the children were running and jumping through that. It was definitely one of the most fun days of year! The week before Christmas, Monet and Michelangelo children did lots of festive activities, such as baking chocolate chip biscuits, Christmas card making and singing Christmas carols. They also looked at how Christmas is celebrated in other parts of the world, more specifically to the respective countries and cultures of the children in our Class. During the last week of December we had a smaller group (12 to 16 children) and to support their knowledge and understanding of Christmas celebrations, Miss Anna brought in Christmas crackers (bonbons) for our Christmas Lunch. They also made ice-cream and had a lot of chances for art and fine motor skill development during painting time- painting a Christmas Tree, Snowman and fireworks.
Mozart and Kindy Class: In the first half of December we had a Water Slide Day; all children had a great time splashing on a hot sunny day. To extend their learning on the occasion of the Water Slide Day event we taught about water safety, water cycle, executed a “sink or float” experiment, the uses for water, how to save water and take care of our environment. All the children were so engaged in water-based art and water play outdoors. During the last two weeks, we spent time learning about summer; the weather in different parts of the world, the suitable clothes and healthy food to consume on hot summer days. The children also had time reviewing the Christmas and had Christmas lunch together with younger children next door. We spent a lot of free time with activities of the children’s choice and said good-bye to many friends who are going to school in January.
Thank you to all the families who have supported us and the children in 2018, happy New Year!
